4th International Symposium on Sturgeon Oshkosh, WI July 8-13, 2001
One of the most important parts of the Symposium became the CITES workshop, which resulted in a discussion of burning issues among representatives of US government organizations, international NGOs, scientists and aquaculturalists. One of the discussed topics was the report "Roe to Ruin," a document put forward by a campaign "Caviar Emptor -- Let the Connoisseur Beware," which was waged by a consortium of three non-governmental organizations, The Wildlife Conservation Society, Natural Resources Defense Council and SeaWeb. The same consortium submitted a petition to the US Fish and Wildlife Service to list Beluga sturgeon in the Appendix I of CITES. Although the reasons for their concern appear to be legitimate, the offered solution is arguable, which is reflected in the World Conservation Trust's document entitled "Sustainable Sturgeon Fisheries in the Caspian Sea -- Will a Trade Ban Contribute to Achieving This Objective?" |
