Sturgeon
Transport
Beginning
on June 6, 2003 Sturgeon Aquafarms, LLC brought 13 shipments of live sturgeon
- beluga, osetra, and sevruga sturgeon, all product of aquaculture - into
the United States. Because of detailed research and cooperation with sturgeon
scientists in various countries, multiple trial runs and lengthy preparations
that took several months, the fish mortality during transportation was
0%. Currently the fish are being kept at the Evans Farm in Pierson, Florida
and will serve as broodstock for the planned aquafarm. Today at the Evans
Farm SAF has over 1000 sevruga, 30 of which are sexually mature. The company
also has 10 adult Russian and 70 adult beluga sturgeon.
Future plans
of Sturgeon Aquafarms, LLC include importing representatives of all 27
existing types of sturgeon to its Florida facility in order to preserve
the gene bank of sturgeon and to have genetic samples of different members
of these ancient species on hand.
